A successful engineer in Africa, Timothee Aka came to the United States in December 2007 to join his wife and make a new life here in Texas. Just a few days after he arrived, the dreams that he had for himself and his family came to a stand-still when he suddenly developed a medical condition that caused difficulty with speaking and walking.
After two years of recovery and rehabilitation, Timothee was well enough to look for work and begin to pay for his medical bills. However, his mobility issues and language barriers made locating a job difficult, so he turned to Goodwill’s Community Rehabilitation Program.
At Goodwill, he continued on a path to recovery by participating in the Work Adjustment Training Program, where he improved his vocabulary and his mobility. He also received interview tips and training, help with his resume and applications, and computer skills training. Less than a year after he arrived at Goodwill, he located a job as a janitor.
A hard-worker, he recently received a “Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Service” from his employer. The new income that he is earning has made it possible for him to slowly begin the process of returning back to activities that he enjoyed doing in the past, including being able to go out to the movies with his wife! He now feels that he is ready to pursue more challenging endeavors, and he continues to work with Goodwill to achieve his employment goals.
“My wife is very proud of me because I have a job,” said Timothee.
